Hop Harvest 2010

August 30th, 2010

Great time at another successful hop harvest in Yakima, WA and a huge thank you to the crew at Hop Union for making it happen.  Outstanding presentations this year from Ralph Olson & Don Bryant, Ashley from White Labs, Ann George with the WA Hop Commission and Steve Dresler from Sierra Nevada.

First hops of 2010 on the kiln, these are Fuggles!

It hit 99F the day we visited the B.T. Loftus Ranch and hop farmer Mike Smith.  This year he had planted a plot of about 25 different hops so you could see the differences between varieties up close and personal!

A visit to beer country…AKA Denver

August 25th, 2010

Dave, Mike (holding future homebrewer Little Mike) and Brian at Beer at Home

A recent visit to the Denver area found me and Dave Richter visiting several homebrew shops. Beer At Home has two locations – this one in Westminster – and a second in Englewood. They’re dispensing bulk Briess malt extract (thanks guys!) and definitely have a passion for brewing. We appreciate the time Brian and Mike took to talk business, brewin’ and beer with us.

Dave will return to Denver in September for the annual Great American Beer Festival. Penny, Rich, Gordon and Monica Briess are also attending. Stop and chat with them if you run into them. Cheers!

I know this is a malt site but…

August 20th, 2010

Penny and I are headed to Yakima for the annual Hop Union Hop School (+ the secret Ralph Olson retirement party) on Monday.  Hop School is a great excursion into hop country with some excellent speakers, tours of hop fields and processing as well as many hoppy IPA’s to be sampled.  Expect some pictures in the near future though too bad they won’t be scratch-n-sniff!!!

Steamy Day at the Great Taste of the Midwest

August 17th, 2010

A great time was had by all at the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison, WI this past weekend.  The heat and humidity were high, and the beer was nice and cold. Spent some time cooling off at the Bell’s 25th Anniversary tent which was located right on the water front. This event is a must do for all Craft beer lovers!  Read the rest of this entry »

Back in the Saddle

August 13th, 2010
I had the opportunity to once again brew German lager beer on a German brewhouse. Joe Hayes the Brewmaster at Black Forest Brew Haus and I brewed from all indications, a delicious batch of Schwarz beer. It was great having the boots on again. This beer was brewed from exclusively Briess Malt. The grist bill included Moravian, Bonlander, Dark Chocolate, and our new Blackprinz® Malt. This velvety dark concoction will be offered in the early fall to Long Island New York’s discerning yet thirsty residents.

Midnight Wheat Brew

August 2nd, 2010

As we have just released our new Midnight Wheat malt I wanted to mention that I brewed an 8 1/2BBL batch of Black IPA (Cascadian Dark) at Schooner Exact Brewing with brewer/owner Matt McClung here in Seattle recently.  The beer came out GREAT with the imperial stout color but without the heavy roasted flavor you would think from being so dark, lots of hops too.  I’ll have the recipe posted on the website soon!

Schwarzbier in the shade

July 30th, 2010

After weeks of torrential downpours the rain stopped long enough for Briess to hold its annual company picnic last Saturday. The Schwarzbier our Sales & Mktg team brewed last month with our new Midnight Wheat Malt was a big hit. And since the horseshoe pits were too wet for the annual tourney and the sun was bright, it turned out to be a great day to find some shade and enjoy a brew. Here are some of the guys who make our malt and malt extracts enjoying the fruits of their labor.

New! Midnight Wheat Malt

July 29th, 2010

We did a sensory wort tasting on our new Midnight Wheat Malt late last week.  We were also able to sample beer made with this new delicious malt.  Everyone was amazed at how smooth and delicate this new 550L malt is.
